Why you should get a good night’s sleep

Five reasons to sleep better.

  • Sleep deprivation causes weight gain.People who sleep 5 hours a night are 60% more likely to be overweight than those who get 7-9 hours per night. “Sleep deprivation increases hunger by altering levels of leptin and gherelin, hormones that regulate appetite,” says research scientist James Gangwisch, Ph.D. at the Columbia University Medical Center.
  • “Beauty sleep” is not a myth.“Inadequate shut-eye triggers a chain of physical changes that negatively affect your skin,” according to dermatologist David Bank, M.D. When sleep deprived, the body lowers blood pressure and pulse rate, decreasing blood flow to the skin. This adversely affects skin health.
  • Sleep improves memory and learning.Sleep helps us to integrate and retain newly learned information and skills. One researcher says that “an all-nighter is not an effective strategy. You’re better off reviewing what you can, then getting enough rest so the details can sink in.”
  • Lack of sleep reduces the strength of the immune system.Women who had difficulty sleeping had the lowest levels of virus combating white cells, found a study at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. “Sleep deprivation is another stress on the body that makes you more susceptible to infection,” says Jan Born, PLD, professor of neuroendocrinology at the University of Lubeck in Germany.
  • Too little sleep increases risk of heart disesase.A single night of four hours sleep raises the level of blood chemicals that are linked to a greater risk of heart attack and stroke, found researchers from the University of California in Los Angeles. Other researchers found that women who sleep less than six hours each night have a 70% increased risk of developing high blood pressure.
