There are two types of stress – good and bad – that affect the body the same way. Stress, due to excessive work pressures, tension at home, trauma, trying to cope with money issues are all negative stressors. Stress that comes from being excited about something or the stress of achieving a goal, or the stress that drives us and keeps us motivated are all positive stressors.

Excessive stress leads to various types of health problems like headaches, fatigue, insomnia, overeating or loss of appetite, muscle cramps, sour stomach, backaches, stiff neck and the list goes on. These problems may sound simple, but in the long run it can affect our immune, cardiovascular and nervous system. In fact, a 2008 British study reported that 54% of the population is more likely to suffer heart attack and stroke if under stress. In another 2008 Swedish study, researchers proved that stress can double the risk of diabetes.

The most effective solution to the problem of stress is a proper exercising routine. Exercise reduces stress and at the same time, relaxes the muscles, helps to cure insomnia and keeps your body fit and in shape. There are various stress relief exercises such as aerobic exercises, brisk walks and to some extent resistance training exercises. Deep breathing and meditation exercises can also be an outlet for stress, and helps in relaxing the mind.

Stretching exercises are very effective in decreasing the production of stress hormones, since they directly target the nervous system. Stretching also loosens the tight muscles and increases blood flow to them. Similarly, relaxation exercises helps to relax the muscles, lowers blood pressure, controls pulse rate and calms the mind and body. It is very important, therefore, to stretch before and after your workout.

Whenever the body is over stressed a hormone known as cortisol is released into the blood stream, which is also known as the stress hormone. Small releases of cortisol have some positive effects like heightened memory functions, quick bursts of energy, increased immunity, but an excessive increase in cortisol levels may lead to blood sugar imbalances, decreased bone density and muscle tissue, suppressed thyroid function, lower immunity and many other negative effects. Glutamine has been shown to counteract the negative effects of cortisol during exercise-induced stress.

Research suggests regular exercise increases ability to handle stress and prevent stress-induced health problems. Regular exercise also helps to increase the production of endorphins – the feel-good chemical.

Stress weakens immunity, whereas proper exercise improves immunity. Exercise is also a natural mood enhancer and removes anxiety and depression. Proper focus on workouts has other benefits like improved body image and helps boost self-esteem. It’s important to follow an exercise regimen that keeps you interested, so that your mind can focus on something other than your worries and stresses. Going regularly to the gym also helps the mind to relax since there is a change of place and scenery, which helps to relieve stress.

StressCaps help you with easing everyday stress.
